Meet Dr. Joy, The Woman Behind The Brand
With over 27 years of experience, Dr. Joy D. Void-Holmes, RDH is considered a renowned educator and thought leader in the dental industry. She is recognized for her ability to evoke passion into her work, from her public speaking engagements to the continuing education courses she’s created to elevate the knowledge of dental professionals nationwide.
Dr. Joy’s career began with trips to the dentist office as a little girl in her native Washington, D.C. Unlike most children, Dr. Joy looked forward to every trip to the dentist; she loved that her dentist looked like her because it allowed her to envision a future with a job she loved that also helped others put their best smile forward. Her dental visits would eventually turn into a position as a front desk receptionist at the very office she grew up visiting at the age of 16 years. She learned the ins and outs of the industry and quickly realized that her original major in college, accounting, would not support her mission to help others in the ways a career as an oral health professional could. With the encouragement of her favorite dentist and mentor, she switched her major.
Dr. Joy enrolled in Howard University, where she received a Certificate in Dental Hygiene. The program helped her to realize how much she loved teeth; her ability to hold her own with dental professionals with 20 years of experience on her motivated her to expand her expertise in the field. She earned a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from The University of Maryland School of Dentistry and two advanced degrees from Nova Southeastern University; a Master of Health Science with a Forensic Investigative Science concentration, and a Doctor of Health Science with a focus in Education in Health Care.
Currently, Dr. Joy is the Program Chair at Fortis College Landover Dental Hygiene Program and holds a faculty position at the American Denturist School. She is founder of Dr. Joy, RDH™, co-founder of JELL-Ed™, an educational consulting company designed to bridge the gap between instruction and the instructor, and creator of the Dental Hygiene Student Planner™. Dr. Joy is a professional speaker and published author. She has presented continuing education courses nationally and internationally in the areas of instrumentation, ultrasonics, infection control, nutrition and biochemistry, and dentinal hypersensitivity, along with her signature keynotes, "Confidence and Courage" and "Diversity of Culture, Diversity of Thought, Diversity of Action".
She serves as a Consultant Examiner for the CDCA examination board and is the Immediate Past-President of The Maryland Dental Hygienists' Association. Dr. Joy is an active member of: The American Academy for Oral Systemic Health; The American Dental Education Association; The American Academy of Dental Hygienists where she serves on the governing council; The American Dental Hygienists' Association where she serves on the Leadership Development Committee and chairs the committee on Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access; the Maryland Dental Action Coalition where she serves as Treasurer; and serves on the Maryland State Board of Dentistry.
When she isn’t mentoring other dental professionals, she’s spending time with her husband of 25 years and four children. For the past 15 years she has volunteered at her local Boys & Girls Club, where she proudly wears several administrative hats.
